What kind of people preserve their pets?

Lots of people ask if they are "weird" or "morbid" for wanting to preserve their pets - we don't think so. The individuals, couples and families we have served have ranged greatly in age, creed, and lifestyle. Most only wish to hold onto their companions for a little bit longer and we hope to provide that comfort through our services.

What should I do to prepare my pet for the services?

It is crucial that once the pet passes, that either you or your vet freeze the remains as soon as possible. This will render any progress in degrading to happen which will allow us to do our work once they are defrosted.

When pets are not frozen right away we cannot guarantee that some services will be an option for your pet based on the amount of decomposition that is present at that time.

Is this legal to do?

Yes. Legally an aftercare professional can be paid to preserve a pet's fur, bones, and body.

However, it is illegal for the client to then sell the pet to another party once taxidermy services are completed. They can gift them, donate to a museum or pass them down to family members/friends. Pretty Dead Taxidermy also accepts donations as well that are used as teaching aid/examples to our apprentices.

Additionally, as per BC Laws all animals that pass under the assistance of a Veterinarian are required to be cremated. We offer both Private Cremation (ashes are returned to client) and Communal Cremation (ashes are not returned).

Pretty Dead Taxidermy is a fully licensed company as per all Government of BC, Government of Canada, City of Vancouver, and follow all regulations provided by the Wildlife Act and Migratory Bird Act

Why do people preserve their pets?

Reasons are always varied person to person. For some, it is a way to keep their pet forever and others it is a physical reminder of all the wonderful memories during their pets life.

Some do not like the idea of only burial and cremation or have religious beliefs that don't align with other available methods of aftercare. Others preserve their pets simply for a beautiful tribute in an artistic and unique way. Overall, the answer always involves a deep love and devotion to their pet.

What can I expect from the taxidermy process?

Custom taxidermy is a time honoured hand craft that takes innumerable amounts of time and care to recreate pets to the best of an artist/taxidermist's ability. Extensive care is taken not only with your pet in our care but in making detailed plans to accomplish the desired result. By recording measurements, consulting reference photos, molding/casting and re-sculpting the anatomy to achieve this.

Additionally, our company handles every step of the process for you—from drop-off to completion—managing all logistics and third parties, so you don’t have to.
